Weight Loss Q & A

What is obesity?

Obesity is an epidemic that affects an estimated 93.3 million American adults and 13.7 million American children and teens, according to a CDC.

Obesity is a term that refers to those who are severely overweight, who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more. This calculation takes into account a person’s height and weight to determine ideal healthy weight ranges.

Each person has a weight range in which they feel and look the healthiest. It is important that you keep this in mind when you focus on taking the best possible care of your body.

What causes obesity and weight gain?

Being overweight or medically obese can be the result of a number of lifestyle choices. You may also be predisposed to being overweight because of genetics or certain health conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypothyroidism.

Some conditions that may place you at higher risk for being overweight or obese include:

  • Unhealthy eating

  • Lack of physical activity

  • Not sleeping well

  • Alcoholism

  • Stressful lifestyle

Hormonal changes as you age may contribute to weight gain and difficulty losing weight. Unhealthy weight gain may also be a side effect of certain medications.

What are some long-term complications of being overweight?

Being overweight or obese can place you at high risk for a number of serious conditions, namely hypertension, type II diabetes, and heart disease.

Other conditions that can be a complication of long-term excessive weight include:

  • Heart disease

  • Breast, colon, and endometrial cancer

  • Stroke

  • Gallbladder disease

  • Liver disease

  • Sleep apnea

  • Arthritis

  • Infertility

Healthy weight management helps to decrease your risk for these potentially difficult health conditions.
