Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal beams highly concentrated light into hair follicles to destroy them and prevent them from regrowing hair in the treated area. The Cuterra HR offers heightened precision that allows Dr. Russell-Little to target dark hairs without damaging the surrounding skin.

What is the Cuterra HR?

The Cuterra HR is a dual-wavelength laser system that uses laser genesis — a noninvasive aesthetic treatment that uses laser technology to stimulate collagen production — to treat a broad range of skin conditions, including laser hair removal.

Some other common skin conditions that the Cuterra HR treats include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Vascular lesions
  • Port-wine stains
  • Rosacea
  • Hemangiomas
  • Spider veins
  • Age spots and sun spots
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Acne scars
  • Skin tags
  • Freckles
  • Saggy skin
  • Redness

Unlike alternative lasers, the Cuterra HR is safe and effective on all skin types, even dark or tanned skin.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal is a popular aesthetic treatment in the US. Once the Cuterra HR beams concentrated light into your hair follicles, the dark pigment in those follicles absorbs the light. Over time, the follicles themselves become damaged and stop producing hair by up to 80% in most cases.

Dr. Russell-Little uses the Cuterra HR to treat many hairs at once, making laser hair removal a quick, effective option to get rid of unwanted hair around the:

  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Armpits
  • Back
  • Bikini area
  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Face

Because the laser is attracted to pigment, you’re an ideal candidate if you have thick, dark, coarse hair.

What happens during laser hair removal?

If you’re visiting Amity Internal Medicine and Total Body for a laser hair removal treatment, avoid waxing, tweezing, and sun exposure for at least six weeks before your appointment.

When you come in for your visit, Dr. Russell-Little or a member of her team gently rubs a topical numbing treatment on your skin to ease your discomfort during the treatment. Next, Dr. Russell-Little adjusts the laser’s settings to match your unique skin.

Finally, she targets the treatment area with the Cuterra HR, which can take several minutes to two hours depending on the size of the area you want to treat.

Dr. Russell-Little may give you an anti-inflammatory cream and advise using ice packs at home if your skin feels irritated after the treatment. It’s perfectly normal for your skin to feel sensitive, much like a sunburn, for the next day or two.

Over the next few weeks, you will start to notice your unwanted hair falling out. During this time, make sure you wear sunscreen to avoid any negative reactions.

It may take several laser hair removal treatments to achieve the results you want. To learn more, call Amity Internal Medicine and Total Body, or schedule a visit.
